Better Dead than Alien is a quirky little shoot-em-up that I had played on the Amiga but not the C64. It's a simple game in the style of Galaxians. There are extra weapons to collect and a large alien to beat after every two waves. There's around 25 sets of levels to conquer - each with a password. It's an average game - which gets very difficult.

The graphics are pretty bland and there are no backgrounds or variation in the setting. It's all based on a single screen starfield. The C64 has many better blasters out there, so I don't see why you'd want to play this one.

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I used an infinite lives cheat.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Not a great deal. As the levels get insanely difficult, you aren't expected to reach the end without cheating. If you do, there's a page of text explaining that there isn't a game ending, and the programmer apologises for the lack of an ending! Never mind - the alien's are dead and the universe is safe again. Hurrah!

  • Neil: The end is a page of text. It's a nice message, but that's all it is. 2/10.
  • Vinny: It's a bit of a weird one this because the coder has obviously had the time and space to create an ending screen (as shown above), but then explains that they didn't create one! Am I missing something here? I feel like giving it a big fat ZERO to support their statement! 2/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: Better dead than reach this "ending"... Poor conclusion to a very average shoot 'em up.
  • Andy Vaisey: To me, the game name is more memorable than the game itself and 'ending'.
  • Gaz Spence: That's a first; an ending that makes an apology for being lame. It can have a big fat 2 on account of its originality.
  • Brendan Phoenix: Or is one of those lame excuses at humour? Either way it's pants and as Andy said, only thing I remember about that game is the title.

FINAL SAY: I didn't think there would be much at the end of this one.
