The enemy have stolen a few nuclear missiles and your mission is to destroy their silos and outposts...

Battle Valley is a 2D tank/helicopter game by Rack-It/Hewson. It's a lot of fun to play, with great graphics that are  well animated, and an easy control system. The four level parallax scrolling is very nice too, so it's all easy on the eye. There's not much variety, but I enjoyed blasting the crap out of everything. There are six missions to beat against the clock, so you need to be at your best to beat this one. It's an excellent budget release that I'd recommend to fans of C64 action games. Check it out...

Final level complete!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: We both used a level skip cheat :-)

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Do you really want to know? Really? Sure? Ok... Once you beat it, a short message pops up that reads 'CONGRATULATIONS: NATIONS SALUTE YOU. PEOPLE OF EARTH ARE SAFE ONCE MORE'. That's it!

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Nice little game with an appalling ending. What a huge let down. All it needed was a nice animated ending to make this a C64 gem. It was not meant to be. 1/10.

  • Vinny: Another game that I purchased on the day of its release because of ZZAP!64's 91% rating... and I wasn't disappointed. A great looking and sounding game with superb game play to boot. The only downside...

...the game ending. What a load of cack! Seriously - this game is superb quality for a budget title and you'd expect something a little more than a lacklustre message :( 0.5/10 from me.

  • Andrew Fisher: Loved this when I got it on a cover tape, but only ever managed to destroy a couple of missiles. It plays in a similar way to Gang of Five's licensed Action Force game, but the parallax scrolling and Maniacs of Noise music make it much better...

...but what a letdown to have such an ending. Take off and nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

  • Gaz Spence: A very good budget game; a variant of Silkworm but with more variety in some respects. I could never progress beyond the 1st level so it's nice to finally see the ending, no matter how poor.

  • Andy Vaisey: Like Andrew, I have this in my collection because of a cover tape and back in the days it gave me a few solid hours/days of play. Never completed it though. Good job too, because that cack ending would have had me tearing hair out.

  • Brendan Phoenix: Hewson and another cack ending. They go together like bacon and eggs.

  • Frank Gasking: I really loved Battle Valley... though my experience of it was from Powerpack 17 - which was one of the best cover mounts I had ever had. Terrible ending though .... I'd always imagine some massive British army at the end ready to greet you and say congrats as a kid!

FINAL SAY: Laugh? I nearly shot the cat... twice...

G.E. RATING: 1 / 10
