• Completed & Reviewed by Neil Collins

Autoduel is a classic RPG by Origin, which is based on the Car Wars board games by Steve Jackson. It's set in the future in a chaotic world where law and order has broken down. Gangs of villains patrol the highways looting and killing others in order to survive. Mr. Big is the guy at the top of the evil hierarchy and it's your job to build a good enough reputation to be able to bring him down. You can battle in arenas to gain cash and enhance you reputation, or drive between cities and battle with the punks that try to ambush you. You can gamble your money away, buy weapons and car parts or complete courier missions for cash. It's up to you how you progress through the game, but you will need to keep the cash coming in to repair your vehicles in order to survive the many battles ahead.

Graphically the game is not much to look at and it plays quite slowly and sluggishly. This is what you would expect from an Origin game as the main emphasis is on a deep and rewarding RPG experience, and as expected this game is another classic.

I played this game for quite some time and enjoyed every minute. Definitely one you should check out...

Oooo... that sounds a little rude.

Have a break. Have a Kit-Kat.

Mars Bars?

Or just check the BBC New app on your iPad.

Oh the scandal of it all!

The End.

HOW WAS IT COMPLETED?: I followed some tips online and worked my way through the game.

SO WHAT HAPPENS?: Eventually you will be thrown a lead as to where Mr. Big's gang is operating. You have to pose as a courier and collect some illegal brain tapes from his headquarters, but deliver them to the FBI instead of the intended target. The FBI thank you for delivering the package and say that this is the break they have been waiting for. With this evidence they can now put Mr. Big behind [Mars] bars for a long time. A picture of the following days newspaper is displayed, which shows Mr. Big being put away. A small picture shows him being arrested and the story explains how he was caught and what happened to his gang. A final page of text is shown which congratulates you on completing Autoduel. The producers encourage you to try out more similar Origin titles or to continue playing the game with your current driver. A final message of thanks from Origin is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

COMMENTS:

  • Neil: Not a brilliant ending, but it concludes the story perfectly. Definitely a game worth playing. 4/10.

  • Vinny: As I've mentioned no end of times, RPG games are not my cup of tea - but I can still appreciate that other people love playing them.

An OK ending and one that is typical of this genre. 4/10 from me too.
  • Andrew Fisher: I still have a huge collection of Car Wars stuff, but I never put long into playing the computer version. The graphics in particular were very average. Still, that's a fairly decent ending that wraps up the plot.
  • Andy Vaisey: I kind of share Vinny's sentiments on RPG's; I never got into them, found them a bit stale and boring, etc.

Anyway, the Autoduel ending - nice to see some GFX, but some supplemental screens would have added even more. 4/10 sound about right to me.
  • Brendan Phoenix: You cannot beat a classic newspaper headline ending! There is a little bit more than that with an ok little epilogue. Pushes it above average for me.

FINAL SAY: Not bad. A fitting end to this classic.

G.E. RATING: 4 / 10
